La Mesa Oktoberfest returns October 2–4, 2026, bringing three days of authentic German-inspired fun, live entertainment, delicious food, and community celebration to the heart of La Mesa Village. As the city’s largest annual event, Oktoberfest welcomes tens of thousands of visitors with something exciting around every corner. Raise a stein in one of three unique biergartens, including the lively Hofbräuhaus Biergarten, the family-friendly Hop Haus on Palm, and the relaxed Craft Beer & Seltzer Garden. Beyond the bier, festivalgoers can enjoy everything from bratwurst, schnitzel, giant pretzels, and strudel to a wide variety of international flavors from local vendors. Artisan Alley also returns with handcrafted goods, gifts, home décor, fresh-baked treats, and more from talented local makers. Families will find more free activities than ever, including the popular Pumpkin Patch, pumpkin decorating, flower crown crafting, maypole dancing, and complimentary hat-making experiences. This concert is presented by the Center for World Music and hosted at Mingei International Museum. Immerse yourself in the vibrant sounds and soulful spirit of Bulgaria through a performance by Ivan and Tzvetanka Varimezov, two of that country’s most esteemed folk artists. Rooted in the musical traditions of the Strandzha and Thrace regions, their program showcases the haunting tones of the gaida (bagpipe) and the dazzling ornamentation of Bulgarian village singing. Through their shared artistry, they bring to life centuries-old songs of love, celebration, and ritual—music that has long united communities and marked life’s most meaningful moments. Interwoven with their artistry are stories of the regions and traditions that shaped this music, offering audiences a rare glimpse into Bulgaria’s living folk heritage. Bicycle Film Festival is coming back to San Diego at the Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art with three curated screenings of short films that celebrate the bicycle on July 25, 2026. Hosted by SD Bike Coalition and Bike SD. BFF San Diego presents international short film programs that appeal to film connoisseurs, avid cyclists, and everyone in between. Curated documentaries, narratives, animations, award-winning directors, and emerging talents all share equal billing. 3 p.m. CINEMATIC SHORTS A story driven program with diverse, cinematic filmmaking styles: documentaries, narrative, animation, and more. 5 p.m. ADVENTURE SHORTS For lovers of mountain biking, gravel, bike packing, and cycling in general. This program will take you on a journey around the world. 8 p.m. URBAN BIKE SHORTS Urban bike shorts capture the spirit of street, youth, fixed gear, bmx, and messenger cultures from passionate cyclists in cities around the world. Join the Center Chorale, Pacific Coast Chorale, Guest Singers and Soloists with Orchestra Tutti of San Diego for a presentation of a symphonic work written for J.R.R Tolkien’s "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy." This exciting score, taken from the Tolkien films, includes 85 instrumentalists, 100 singers, soloists and children’s chorus. The music of "The Lord of the Rings" creates a new and dramatic live concert experience, led by Guest Conductor James Beauton of San Francisco. "The Fellowship of the Ring," composed by Howard Shore, won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2001. The score incorporates unusual percussion instruments, including Japanese taiko drums, metal bell plates and chains beaten upon piano wires to depict the mythical creatures called Orcs. DEAD MOUNTAINEER’S HOTEL (“HUKKUNUD ALPINISTI” HOTEL) – 1979, Tallinnfilm, 84 min. "I was on call to drive to a mountain hotel. The hotel's name was The Dead Mountaineer," says police inspector Peter Glebsky (Uldis Pūcītis) at the beginning of Estonian director Grigori Kromanov’s dazzling, paranoid mixture of locked-room mystery, 1970s Euro giallo, classic noir whodunit, and (unbelievably) alien sci-fi ala THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. Based on a novel by famed Soviet authors Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (STALKER, HARD TO BE A GOD), the hall-of-mirrors plot follows Glebsky as he’s trapped by avalanche in the ski lodge with a rogues’ gallery of weird suspects: tubercular gangster Hinckus (Mikk Mikiver), creepy hotel owner Snewahr (Jüri Järvet, KING LEAR), a wall-climbing physicist (Lembit Peterson), a louche, wig-wearing beauty out of a Bryan Ferry song (Irena Kriauzaite) – oh, and the Dead Mountaineer’s faithful St. Bernard. The interior of the hotel (brilliantly art directed by Tõnu Virve and Priit Vaher, and photographed by Jüri Sillart) is straight out of a Dario Argento or Sergio Martino thriller: all chrome-and-marble with Space Age modern designs, drenched in champagne and feather boas. Featuring a stellar electronica / prog score by composer Sven Grünberg, the film combines an eerie THE SHINING-like mountain locale with speculative sci-fi straight out of Chariots of the Gods. “This is the end of the road. The only way is back,” as the hotel owner cryptically smiles. Newly restored in 4K by Deaf Crocodile in collaboration with the Estonian Film Institute and Film Archive.
