When singer, fiddler and songwriter Lily Henley set out to make an album of Sephardic Jewish ballads set to new melodies, she was looking for her own way to interpret a critically endangered tradition. On Oras Dezaoradas (out on Lior Éditions Records), Henley highlights the Ladino language, a threatened tongue that fuses old Spanish with Hebrew, Arabic, and Turkish elements that is spoken by less than 100,000 people in the world today. She found herself directly connected to centuries of women spread across a forced global diaspora. The album is not a reinterpretation project—Henley’s newly-penned songs and melodies are a reclamation and contribution, a living line between her musical roots in American and Celtic traditions and the rich history and culture of her Sephardi ancestors. A San Diego sport fishing tradition, The Port Of San Diego’s Day At The Docks is the West Coast’s largest public celebration of sport fishing. Signaling the official start of Southern California’s spring saltwater fishing season, Day At The Docks takes place on Sunday, April 13, 2025 against the colorful and dynamic backdrop of world renown sport fishing fleet on San Diego Bay. Fishing Seminars: The serious fisherman can explore the latest fishing tackle presented by the industry’s leading manufacturers. Historical displays underscore how far saltwater tackle design has come. How-to seminars by expert fishermen reveal secrets on improving both technique and results. Kids Fishing Adventure: Sponsored by Okuma Fishing Tackle & Everingham Bros Bait Company. From 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. For kids 4-12 years old. The Kid’s Fishing Adventure is made up of areas set aside and stocked with fish, providing kids with the chance wet a line and make a catch. If you have never cast a line in your life, don’t worry. This competition is for everyone, pro and novice alike. Competition is set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Points are awarded for distance and accuracy. Izorline Knot Tying Competition: Young and old alike can try their hand at tying the strongest fishing knot with assistance from the pro staff at Izorline. Knot tying demonstrations will be followed by hands-on competition in which individual knots will be tested against the Izorline Knot Gauge, a device that measures a knot’s breaking point by pressure. Competition will take place in three divisions: Small fry (up to 10 years old), Juniors (11-16 years old) and Adults. A voluntary donation of $1-5 to enter the competition will benefit the Friends of Rollo a non-profit organization that takes kids fishing. The contest runs all day at the Izorline exhibit booth. Winners in each division will be announced at the end of the day. Prizes include ½ day and full day fishing trips. The modern sportfishers in the San Diego fleet will be hosting a grand open house. You are welcome to climb aboard and look around. Joining the fleet for the day will be several small boat dealers. Marine Art: Peter J Galleries art features painting atop marine charts and Gyotaku, the traditional Japanese method of printing fish. Larry Beard Ocean Fine Art displays beautiful marine photography printed on aluminum, Marea Baja Designs will be offering beautiful sea glass mosaics. Make Tiny Ceramics! Join me in the land of miniatures. You will learn how and get to create tiny pottery on a mini pottery wheel. No previous pottery experience necessary! In this 2-hour class, you will learn to create 1-3 tiny pots and can add some color if you would like to. You will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is less intimidating and is an accessible way to throw and center clay. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery! This class includes clay, under glazing and firing of the clay. The clay cannot be taken home at the time of the class because it must be kiln fired. The turn around is 1-2 weeks for drying, glazing, and firing before you pick up your miniature creations. No experience necessary. Illume Speaker Series Knapp Lecture On James Baldwin: Racial Progress without Redemption Melvin L. Rogers, PhD | Knapp Chair of Liberal Arts Thursday, February 27, at 6 p.m. IPJ Theatre, Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice The lecture invites the audience to travel back to the 1960s and to think through the assumptions that frame our discussion about racial progress. Baldwin asks us to disentangle our preoccupation with redemption to achieve democratic progress. Advancing democracy through dialogue may mean we don’t completely forget our missteps and trauma. Advancing democracy may involve figuring out how to dialogue, given that the past and present trauma may persist. Melvin L. Rogers, PhD, is the Edna and Richard Salomon Distinguished Professor of Political Science and associate director of the Center for Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Brown University.
