Sunday, November 2, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. No experience necessary. Age 15+ welcome! An ancient and eco-centered craft, Natural Dyes are a place to connect with the beauty and bounty of our planet’s rich offerings while creating with color and using our hands and minds to refresh our homes, wardrobes and to create one-of-a-kind palettes. In this hands-on workshop students will learn the entire process of natural dyeing while incorporating creative design elements through resist dye methods of Shibori. Each student will Shibori and hand-dye three natural fiber silk &/or bamboo scarves or squares to take home or gift to loved ones. If you’ve ever looked into using Natural Dyes, you may have been intimidated by the many facets of the process. We’ll cover them all–scour, mordant, preparation of natural dye, basic Shibori dye resist methods, natural dyeing & finishing–in great detail so you can get to creating with natural color today. All materials included. Students will receive an "Intro to Natural Dyes" booklet that covers the entire process in detail, three natural fiber scarves to dye and Shibori, and samples from the dye pots. We are celebrating the characteristics of of self-expression, identity, activism, joy and belonging, with an art exhibition on July 26, featuring work made by local creatives, and Artists in Residence, who who have interpreted the themes with works of all mediums. Drag Performer Miss Kerioki will be attending from 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. for a live figure drawing opportunity, and photo session. The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 5, we will have Jeremy Kurtz-Harris on the double bass, performing classical works inspired by folk music, world music, and more. Bassist Jeremy Kurtz-Harris has a diverse musical background that includes solo, chamber, and orchestral performance. He has been the Principal Bassist of the San Diego Symphony since 2004 and has also played Guest Principal Bass with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. During 2015-16, Kurtz-Harris was an acting member of the San Francisco Symphony, performing as Principal for most of the season. He has also played Associate Principal Bass in the summers with the Sun Valley Music Festival since 2010. Kurtz-Harris is an avid proponent of the double bass as a solo instrument. He regularly performs solo recitals, has been featured as a soloist with numerous ensembles, and recorded an album, "Sonatas and Meditations" which featured his long-time collaborator, pianist Ines Irawati. He actively encourages composers to write both solo and chamber music for bass, and has commissioned and premiered multiple works for the instrument. As a chamber musician, he has performed at La Jolla Summerfest, Carnegie’s Weill Hall, and on San Diego’s “Art of Elan” chamber series. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and Rice University, Kurtz-Harris is a dedicated pedagogue. He has been the classical bass teacher at San Diego State University since 2006, and has taught master classes in the U.S., Mexico, and Australia. He has also served as a board member for the International Society of Bassists, which fosters interaction among bassists from many countries, backgrounds, and musical genres, and also opportunities for young bassists. In addition to his double bass performing and teaching pursuits, Kurtz-Harris also enjoys experimenting with sound design, audio recording, composing, arranging, and playing drums.
