  • Join us Thursday, April 23 for the premiere "Coyote Tracks," the latest film from Executive Producer Wes Bruce, and Director Ryan Shoemaker at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. About the Film "Coyote Tracks" is a genre-blurring cinematic journey where myth and reality intertwine through the eyes of a wandering Coyote. As he travels through an unfamiliar landscape, he gathers the stories of the people he encounters—transforming them into songs that reflect the spirit and memory of a community. Developed over three years as part of an immersive installation by The Curious Life, the film is rooted in a deeply collaborative process across Indiana. Featuring local artists and cultural practitioners—including jazz musicians, a limestone sculptor, and an African dance collective—each participant plays a version of themselves, contributing to what the filmmakers describe as a “verité fantasy.” At its core, "Coyote Tracks" explores how stories are created, shared, and carried forward. It serves as both a meditation on our overwhelming access to information and a reflection on the human need to find meaning within it. The film offers a poetic glimpse into the creative process—messy, beautiful, and ongoing—while honoring the ways communities preserve their histories through storytelling. Event Details 6 p.m. -- Screening 1 + Panel Panel: Hear from members of Fleet Science Center, New Children's Museum, and The Curious Life as they dive into the topics of museum work in a rapidly changing world, how to center community engagement in creative practice, and what it takes to realize bold, evolving projects within structures that demand certainty—from funding to governance to permitting. 8 p.m.-- Screening 2 Please Note: There will be photography and video recording during this event. By attending the event, you consent to and authorize, without further compensation, the use and reproduction of any film or photographs.

  • Dr. Lisa Stowers of Scripps Research Institute will discuss how her laboratory focuses on basic neuroscience in determining how the brain creates and responds to emotion. Using male mice in a amimal model, responses to another animal entering the cage begin with the sensory system. Pheromones released are an indication of how social interactions will proceed. The lab has made several discoveries about specific pheromones that connect with emotional responses in mice. The research was originally funded by a grant from the National Institute of Health’s BRAIN Initiative. For more information, visit sdscholars.org. The lecture will also be available on Zoom.
