St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center (SMSC), a nonprofit organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will celebrate spooky season at the upcoming “Spookeasy” event on Saturday, October 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. In true speakeasy fashion, the event will take place at a hidden location on SMSC’s two-acre campus, adding to the thrilling fun. Guests will be taken back to the 1920s, where speakeasies were prominent, but spirits may haunt about. All are encouraged to come dressed in costumes to have a chance of winning prizes in the costume contest. Along with signature cocktails and spooktacular bites, the event will feature live music and entertainment, a cigar bar, and opportunity drawings. Brave attendees can stroll down the haunted trail, if they dare. This night of thrills and chills raises funds for SMSC’s nationally recognized innovative programs, such as the Activity Center, Adult Developmental Center, Behavior Modification Program, and Senior Program. The center’s “Life Program” allows students to develop creative outlets, learn marketable skills, and gain a sense of independence and self-esteem. Over 400 students attend SMSC, ranging from high school graduates to seniors in their eighties. The event is being put on by RunEC, a leadership project born out of the San Diego Regional East County Chamber’s Leadership Class of 2012. RunEC has raised over $200,000 for local nonprofits over the years through community events. Tickets are on sale now and start at $125. Everyone in the community is invited to Light Up a Life, a special candle-lighting ceremony to celebrate the people whose lives have warmed their hearts and whose memories illuminate their lives. The Elizabeth Hospice will host this family-friendly event on Sunday, November 12, 2023, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., at the California Center for the Arts. Light Up a Life blends inspirational messages, music, and a memorial ceremony to lift the hearts of those touched by loss, illness or sorrow. Admission and parking are free. Registration is required by November 3. All attendees will have the opportunity to light a candle during the memorial ceremony. In support of The Elizabeth Hospice’s nonprofit mission, a donation of $50 is suggested. This annual award honors artistic expression with a cash prize, exhibition opportunities, and spotlights artists in the San Diego to Ensenada, Mexico region whose outstanding achievements in the field of visual arts merit recognition. The San Diego Visual Arts Network is pleased to announce the four recipients of the 2023 San Diego Art Prize: Mely Barragan, Anya Gallaccio, Janelle Iglesias, and Joe Yorty. Recipients were nominated by 17 local arts professionals and selected by an esteemed panel of curators from respected institutions: Pedro Alonzo - Adjunct Curator, Dallas Contemporary, Dallas, Texas, Susanna Temkin - Curator at El Museo del Barrio, New York, New York, Kathryn Kraczon - Director of Exhibitions of the Brown Arts Institute (BAI) and Chief Curator of the David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University, Providence Rhode Island. On Friday, October 27 from 7 p.m. ‘till closing, family-owned winery, Pali Wine Co., is throwing “Boos & Bottles,” a natural wine fueled Halloween bash! In the enchanting Little Italy backyard, a live DJ will be on deck from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., spinning hauntingly good tunes for the crowd. It's an opportunity to dance the night away beneath the moon's watchful gaze while enjoying food specials, festive drinks and, of course, wine. Neighborhood Winery, Pali Wine Co.’s creative natural wine label, will be pouring wines for the occasion like “Spooky Juice,” a spellbinding white wine blend, or “Full Moon,” a bewitching red wine capturing the spirit of a North Italian red with a Californian twist. Come dressed in a costume to enjoy happy hour pricing on tap glasses (limit one per guest) to keep spirits high throughout the evening; prizes will be awarded for best costumes!
