Kick off the 13th season of the First Friday Art Walk Oceanside on Friday, May 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in downtown Oceanside. This free, family-friendly event features over 60 local artists, makers, and creatives showcasing unique, handmade work in Artist Alley and the Civic Center Library Plaza, along with live music throughout the evening. Returning for its second year, the After Art Party continues from 8 to 9 p.m. with a live performance by Jaco Mello on the Civic Center Library Plaza stage. In conjunction with the Art Walk, the Oceanside Museum of Art will offer free admission from 5 to 8 p.m., including a docent-led tour at 6 p.m. and a cash bar with beer and wine. K. Wayne Yang, PhD | Professor, Ethnic Studies and Provost of John Muir College, UC San Diego Dr. Yang’s research and teaching interests focus on how our conception and experience of learning are shaped by settler colonialism. His recent book, "A Third University Is Possible," explores the historical legacy of the Morrill Land Act of 1862, by which acres of Indigenous lands were taken by governments in Union states to raise funds for new universities to educate settlers in agriculture and science. At USD, how can we hold ourselves accountable beyond land acknowledgements to the Kumeyaay people? He writes, "Within the colonizing university also exists a decolonizing education. A Third University is a practical workplace. We must go through the critique to get to the work."

Saturday, May 9 marks the 34th anniversary of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, the nation’s largest one-day food drive. Each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers collect non-perishable food donations left by customers at their mailboxes. The food goes directly to the San Diego Food Bank and other local pantries to help families in San Diego County who are facing hunger. Over the past 30 years, the drive has collected more than 1.94 billion pounds of food nationwide. Yet the need remains high—over 47 million Americans, including 13 million children and 7.4 million seniors, experience food insecurity. The drive is especially important in spring, when many food pantries run low on supplies and school meal programs are unavailable to many children. How to help: Place a bag of non-perishable food by your mailbox on Saturday, May 9, 2026, and your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it the San Diego Food Bank and other local food pantries.
