Kids explore ceramics and woodworking! Mon through Fri | July 28 – Aug 1 | 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 years welcome! This week of Summer Camp is all about ceramics & woodworking for kids! Kids learn woodworking hand tool techniques from woodworking professional, Steffanie Dotson. A mom, woodworker, furniture maker, and Executive Director at San Diego Craft Collective, she teaches woodworking to both children and adults year-round. With a focus on safety, Steffanie creatively mentors children and fosters confidence through woodworking. Kids will also explore ceramics with visual artist-educator, Lydia Kardos. Each camper will learn and practice ceramic hand building techniques to make fun, long-lasting projects in this traditional medium full of creative flexibility. This camp is for kids, ages 7-12 years. Projects and depth of learning are matched up to the children’s age/ability. OPTIONAL | Lunch Hour Supervision If there is a camp ending as ours begins and you need your child transferred from another camp, let us know! If your child is signed up for morning and afternoon camps here at The Maac at Liberty Station (the building San Diego Craft Collective is located in–Dorothy Laub Music & Arts Center), we’re here to provide that space for your them. Lucas Smith, celebrated award-winning artist and resident of San Diego, California, showcases his latest solo exhibition “Beyond the Boundaries: An Exploration in Abstract Art” at Studio 21 in April. This collection is an invitation to experience nature’s beauty through abstraction—to feel its presence, energy, and serenity in a way that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. It explores the dynamic interplay of color, texture and movement. In the past year, Lucas’s work has been juried in dozens of shows in some of San Diego’s best galleries and was awarded Best of Show, two 1st place, two 2nd place, Juror’s Choice, three Honorable Mentions and People’s Choice. He is a juried member of the Professional Artist group and is resident of Studio 2 at Art on 30th in North Park. Lucas is the Assistant Director of the San Diego Watercolor Society’s 45th International Exhibition and a member of North Coastal Art Gallery, OMA Artist Alliance, Sargent Art Group, and Foothills Art Association. He also recently launched Art Connect, a Facebook group that links artists to opportunities while encouraging collaboration and mutual support. Lucas’s art continues flying off the easel with 55 paintings sold in the past year through solo exhibitions, juried gallery shows, and private commissions. His work is now part of collections across California and the U.S., including New York, Connecticut, North Carolina, Illinois, Missouri, Oregon, Arizona, and internationally in Norway. For several decades, Village Arts Outreach has served as a crucial artistic outreach for the Art Center at Spanish Village in Balboa Park. Over the years, thousands of local emerging artists have been given the opportunity to showcase their work in Village Arts Outreach’s intimate, yet professional exhibit venue. “Beyond the Boundaries: An Exploration in Abstract Art” is on display at Studio 21 April 8th – 21st from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. daily, or by private appointment. Yang Jiang (b. 1988, China) is a San Diego–based artist and therapist whose tactile and dreamlike creations embody emotional liberation and spiritual freedom. Shimmering like artifacts from a fairy tale, her pieces use light, texture, and sculptural forms to convey a sense of vulnerability and resilience. A testament to the beauty and complexity of spiritual survival, Jiang’s work offers viewers a poignant reminder of the courage and tenderness of the human heart. Her art has been exhibited at the Athenaeum Art Center, Visual Art + Supply, Revision San Diego, and the Brown Building. Jiang is a graduate of Wellesley College and the University of San Diego. I Thought I’d Be Braver, Jiang’s debut solo exhibition, is a decade-long chronicle of her journey toward emotional courage. Her early work, characterized by bold colors and harsh textures, reflects the pain of repressed emotions and a fear of vulnerability. Gradually, this aesthetic softens into one of sheer, vibrant hues and delicate layers, mirroring her internal shift toward nurturance, forgiveness, and compassion. This evolution in her style reflects the brave heart of a wounded healer who has confronted her shadow and embraced self-acceptance, demonstrating that true courage lies in acknowledging and integrating one’s emotions. This eight-week workshop style course introduces students to a popular and fun printmaking technique of silk screen. No prior experience in printmaking is necessary. Students will create vibrant, multicolor prints using water-based silk-screen materials while exploring their own style and applying this popular method to their own imagery. The direct, on-screen stencil techniques, such as screen filler/drawing fluid or wax crayon, as well as indirect, photo-emulsion methods of drawing on Mylar will be shown, and digital file preparation will be explored. A stencil monotype-printing and mixed-media approaches will be covered. Students will learn how to set up their own DIY studio and will learn all aspects of preparation, setup, and production of fine art prints. Materials: Ink and studio materials will be provided.
