Conducted by Steven Schick, Art of Elan will perform Olivier Messiaen's "From the Canyons to the Stars" in Borrego Springs. The music was inspired by Messiaen's intensely spiritual experience in the American desert.

Join us for two uplifting concerts celebrating racial justice! The weekend starts with a breathtaking performance by Tonality, a two-time GRAMMY® Award-winning choral ensemble based in Los Angeles. Their performance is followed by our Sankofa Celebration Concert, featuring FUMCSD’s Masterwork Chorale and Chancel Choir and conducted by Dr. Alexander Lloyd Blake. All proceeds from the concert support FUMCSD’s Racial Justice Ministry, as we pursue repentance, justice, and reconciliation and commit to a new way of being. Proceeds will help commission a special piece of sacred art for our Sanctuary celebrating the Imago Dei—the image of God—in the beautiful diversity of humanity. CONCERT DETAILS: Tonality: Saturday, November 7 at 4 p.m. in FUMCSD Sanctuary Tonality, the two-time GRAMMY® Award-winning choral ensemble from Los Angeles, brings America Will Be to First United Methodist Church of San Diego. Under the direction of founder Dr. Alexander Lloyd Blake, 16 Tonality vocalists, joined by instrumentalists and soloists, present a program that asks what America owes its people and what it can still become. At its center is "Running From, Running To: A Musical Reflection on Ahmaud Arbery," co-written by Blake and Ogi. The work premiered at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in 2025 and appears on Tonality’s album "Songs of Remembering" (Bright Shiny Things, 2026). For ten years, Tonality has used music to tell stories that call people toward each other and toward action. This concert carries that work to San Diego for one night. Sankofa Celebration Concert: Sunday, November 8 at 4 p.m. in FUMCSD Sanctuary This inspiring program features music by Black Composers and is conducted by Dr. Alexander Lloyd Blake, Founding Artistic Director of Tonality. Upcoming dates: Thursday, October 29, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, November 19, 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 23, 6-8 p.m. Each month, we offer free Mending Open Studio, a welcoming space where you can work on your mending pile or creative upcycling projects while getting guidance from experienced sewists and menders. Come gather new ideas, approaches, and techniques as you make progress on your own project — and let us help you bring renewed life to something in your home or closet. What to Bring: Your own item to work on–clothing or textiles that need repair, embellishment, or a creative refresh work perfectly. How It Works: This session is first come, first served. Simply arrive, sign in, and wait your turn for instructor guidance. The session will remain open during the scheduled times, and as you wait for assistance, you may work independently and chat with others. We look forward to mending with you! Note: Instructors will not mend items for you—they are here to provide support, ideas, and direction. We also may not have exactly what your project needs for repair, so plan to bring any items you may want to work with if they are specific (e.g. a particular color or type of thread, elastic, embroidery floss, zipper, etc.) Ages 12+ may attend independently. Ages 6–11 years are welcome with an assisting adult. If both adult and child will work on their own projects, please purchase two spaces. Robin Dahlberg is an award-winning visual artist and attorney whose work examines the human impact of systemic injustice. She spent two decades designing and leading campaigns to reform the U.S. criminal justice system. Justin Brooks is Professor at the University of San Diego School of Law, co-founder of the California Innocence Project, and the author of "You Might Go to Prison Even Though You’re Innocent". Over more than thirty-five years as a criminal defense attorney, he has helped secure the release of forty wrongfully convicted people. Eddie Lowery, one of the exonerees portrayed in "Breaking Point," spent nine years in prison before being paroled and ultimately clearing his name.
