McAlister Institute will hold its 11th Annual 5K Walk for Sobriety on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at NTC Park at Liberty Station. The Walk is an opportunity to bring help and hope to thousands of individuals and families braving the unforgiving cycle of addiction. The Walk for Sobriety is not only an opportunity to raise funds for life-saving services, but also a positive way to increase awareness, support the power of recovery, and fight the stigma many people with substance use disorders experience. Jeanne McAlister, founder of the McAlister Institute, is celebrating her 91st birthday and 67th year of sobriety. All proceeds from the Walk for Sobriety benefit McAlister Institute, one of San Diego's leading resources for individuals and families impacted by addiction. McAlister Institute helps bring life-saving services in substance abuse treatment, mental health counseling, life skills education and vocational training to individuals. McAlister Institute’s mission is to save lives by ensuring affordable, quality treatment for every individual and family who seeks help, striving not to turn anyone away regardless of financial issues. Check-in and registration will begin on-site at 8 A.M. Registration costs $35 per adult and $5 per child (ages 12 and under). “Since 1977, hundreds of thousands of individuals suffering from addiction have passed through the doors of McAlister Institute, and not one of them – not one – has chosen to become an addict,” said Jeanne McAlister, Founder and CEO of McAlister Institute. “Treatment solutions shouldn’t discriminate who gets help. Skate Rising is hosting free skateboarding lessons with the underlying theme “We Rise by Lifting Others” on Saturday August 12 from 9 - 11 a.m. at Encinitas Community Park. Founded in 2016, the program offers service opportunities and free skate instruction for girls ages 4 -18 every second Saturday of the month. This month, Skate Rising invites children to participate in a kindness activity that benefits families and individuals at the Community Resource Center’s domestic violence shelter. Professional instruction will be offered by local pro and Olympic skaters and free rental gear will be available for all. Take a glimpse into the vault of stowed away art pieces by world renowned artist James Hubbell in the newest exhibition titled, “Seeking Beauty – From the Archives of James Hubbell” at the Santa Ysabel Art Gallery. Running from Saturday, Sept. 9 to Monday, Oct. 30, the exhibition seeks to educate the public about the behind-the-scenes work happening at the Ilan-Lael Foundation such as preserving James Hubbell works and spreading awareness of his vision and creativity. For the first time, James Hubbell opens his archival collection to exhibit never before seen artworks and ephemera that identify pivotal experiences in his childhood, his time at art school, and his explorations of the wider world in the years before he settled in Santa Ysabel. These experiences collectively mold a young man with ideas which he revisits throughout his career, expressing his love of nature, architecture, mythology, and the joy and pathos of being human. Opening reception: 4-8 p.m. on Sept. 9: To kick-off the new exhibition, the Ilan-Lael Foundation and the Santa Ysabel Art Gallery welcome the public to the opening reception on Saturday, September 9 where guests will get the opportunity to hear speeches from other prominent local and regional artists as well as view a selection from an extensive collection of over 17,000 items from the artist's archive, including paintings, journal entries, sketches, photos, patterns, and samples.
