He will share a special presentation on his Athenaeum show, The Splinter in the Eye, and how it connects to his career and process. The reception will take at 6 p.m., followed by a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Carlos Castro Arias will be exhibiting his newest project, The Splinter in the Eye, an installation composed of paintings and objects in which the artist reflects about memory, trauma, and elements of the individual and collective identity. Carlos Castro Arias is a Colombian artist, professor, and musician. He received a BA from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogota in 2002 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2008 to the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received an MFA in painting in 2010. Castro Arias has been an associate professor at San Diego State University since 2019. In 2022, the Museo Universitario Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia exhibited a retrospective of his work entitled La Vida de las Cosas Muertas (The Life of Dead Things). Most recently Castro Arias has exhibited at Artpace, San Antonio; Bread & Salt, San Diego; LA Galería, Bogota; Quint Gallery, La Jolla, and Espacio El Dorado, Bogota. He has participated in group shows in Sweden, Peru, France, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Venezuela. His musical projects include: POPO (2000), Los Claudios de Colombia (2005-2010) and Amor Negro (2020). The artist lives and works between San Diego, Tijuana, and Bogota. Join us for a screening of four of Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s groundbreaking films on Sunday, October 20 at The Front Arte Cultura Gallery, offering a rare glimpse into the evolution of his cinematic work. "Son of Border Crisis" (1990), directed by Isaac Artenstein, tackles the cultural clashes and immigrant struggles faced by Mexican-Americans. "SF Apocalypse" (2022), is a post-pandemic experimental performance film set in a dystopian art space on the periphery of San Francisco. Shot by filmmaker Gustavo Vazquez, the film features a cast of 25 artists who join Gómez-Peña in creating a visionary commentary on the collapse of creative spaces in a post-pandemic world. "Oaxacalifornia" (2024) showcases decades of collaborative work by La Pocha Nostra with artists in Oaxaca, Mexico. "Alien Planet" (2024), an exclusive sneak peek at a brand-new film created during LPN’s ongoing artistic residency in Roswell, New Mexico. Directed by Balitrónica and Gómez-Peña. The duo’s first-ever live collaboration promises an adventurous dialogue of words and sound. Act Two presents "The Mexican Husband" (2019) by Fabiola Carranza, a bilingual reimagining of Bertolt Brecht’s "The Jewish Wife" set in contemporary Los Angeles. The play follows a couple’s final night together before the husband flees across the border to avoid deportation—an unflinching, poetic meditation on immigration, separation, and resilience in the face of systemic injustice. Composer and sound artist Sam Dunscombe surrounds audiences in an acousmonium–an immersive “loudspeaker orchestra” of more than two dozen custom-positioned speakers. First developed in the 1970s by the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in Paris, the acousmonium was designed to project electroacoustic music in space—treating each speaker as an individual voice in a vast sonic field. Dunscombe’s hand-built system transforms the room into a living architecture of sound, where tones move, swirl, and morph depending on where you stand. The program features spectral soundscapes and textural explorations that invite audiences to walk, turn, and listen from multiple perspectives, making each seat a unique vantage point. It’s a rare opportunity to experience sound not just as music, but as a three-dimensional environment you can inhabit.
