The series concludes on June 21 with the return of the Melissa Aldana Quartet, with Aldana on tenor sax, Fabian Almazan on piano, Pablo Menares on bass, and Kush Abadey on drums. Aldana’s last Athenaeum performance was in March 2020, when she played music from her album "Visions" for Frida Kahlo, which earned her a first-ever GRAMMY nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo. Her program this June will feature music from her 2024 release on Blue Note Records, Echoes of the Inner Prophet. A native of Chile, Aldana moved to the United States to attend Berklee College of Music. In 2013, at age 24, she became the first female instrumentalist and the first South American musician to win the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Her latest album explores a fascinating paradox. As Aldana explains, it reflects her “personal journey, with an especially introspective point of view. The inner prophet is my own self, now older, who has the knowledge and the intuition and the truth about what my path should be. So, it’s this idea of connecting with that inner prophet,” she continues, “which reveals things about myself, including those things I don’t like.” At the same time, this deeply intimate, searching project is a celebration of collaboration and community. It documents the evolution of her quartet, capturing the collective insight they’ve garnered after extensive touring and travel, and arguing for their place among the most incisive working groups in jazz today. We’re putting our fresh hay bale targets to use for back-to-back open range Saturdays here at the San Diego Archaeological Center! Join us to shoot and learn about how different cultures around the world crafted, hunted, and fought with bows and arrows. This event is family friendly. Kids will enjoy a supervised range at the front of the museum all to themselves, with an adults-only range for more powerful bows in the back. No previous experience required. The Valley Center Stampede Rodeo & Memorial Festival is held annually in the rural town of Valley Center, CA over the Memorial Day weekend. Our quaint community is nestled in the mountains of North San Diego County and still exemplifies many aspects of America's traditional western and agricultural lifestyles. Since 2002, the Valley Center Stampede Rodeo has provided a family-friendly rodeo as part of the annual week-long western heritage celebration that began in 1950. In 2015, we created the Memorial Festival to pay tribute to our nation’s veterans. The Valley Center Stampede Rodeo & Memorial Festival provides the ultimate venue for our town and surrounding communities to come together and participate in America’s greatest showcase of patriotism and western heritage…rodeo! In 2017, the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) sanctioned the Valley Center Stampede Rodeo, making it the first-ever professional rodeo in Valley Center. The Valley Center Stampede Rodeo committee takes great pride in showcasing local youth through our "Mutton Bustin’" event, Junior Barrel Racing, and a Calf Scramble during intermission that is open to children in attendance free of charge. In support of our stated mission, rodeo proceeds are donated to local youth organizations, as well as organizations that promote the morale of our local military.
