Legendary Singer/Songwriter Judy Collins headlines The Magnolia in El Cajon on Wednesday, February 12. At age 85 and in her 6th decade, the folk icon is enjoying an artistic renaissance as well as experiencing a profound level of growth and prolific creativity. In 2022, the poetic storyteller and songwriter released her 55th album titled "Spellbound," marking the first time ever she ever wrote all the songs on one of her albums. The annual Wildlife in Art show, hosted by the Foothills Art Association is one of Southern California's longest running show. The opening of this year marks our 35th consecutive year. All artists are invited to submit Wildlife art in various mediums. We anticipate over 100 submissions. Ken Goldman an internationally renowned wild life artist, author and teacher is this years juror. The show is from October 29th to December 4th. The awards reception will be on Saturday November 2nd from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Music will be performed by the Paul Marcus trio. Appetizers and refreshments will be served. On Friday, December 6, Songwriter Sanctuary will present its last concert of the 2024 season. This special holiday edition will feature an in-the-round performance from Kimmi Bitter, Mark Montijo, and Bobo Czarnowski. Hosted by SD Music Hall of Famer Jeff Berkley in partnership with Normal Heights United at their beautiful historic sanctuary. About the Artists Kimmi Bitter: Driven by a hyper-obsession for the 1960s, Kimmi Bitter creates a captivating soundscape that blends golden-era Countrypolitan with psychedelic twangs and a mod flair. Creating a buzz from her grassroots efforts and vigorous touring, her debut album "Old School" hit the ground running in 2024 landing on the Top 25 Americana Album Radio Chart and has garnered three separate song nominations to date. Tracks like the tear-jerking ballad "My Grass is Blue" have grown comparisons of time when Patsy Cline and The Jordanaires overtook radio waves. Saving Country Music called it "solid country gold," nominating it for Single of the Year alongside the likes of Charley Crockett and Sierra Ferrell. Though driving her career independently, she is no stranger to building her accolades. “Aquamarine” took home Song of the Year at the 2024 San Diego Music Awards alongside fellow nominees Jason Mraz, P.O.D., Slightly Stoopid, and Thee Sacred Souls. Additionally, her breakout album skyrocketed to #1 on the Alt. Country Specialty Charts for four consecutive weeks. She's a San Diego Music Award winner for Best Country/Americana Artist, with "My Grass is Blue" snagging another Song of the Year nod in 2023. American Songwriter Magazine described Mark’s music as “ ... brilliant songwriting, evoking that gentle, poignant place John Prine brought us to so often, merging the sorrow with some laughter ...”, and his song “Someone Can Fly” earned him an Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting Award at the 19th Annual Great American Song Contest. Mark will be accompanied at Songwriter Sanctuary by multi-instrumentalist Lenny Bole, who also contributed to every track on Mark’s recently released album “If I Get to Heaven.” (photo by Carina Wheatley) Bobo Czarnowski: Born on the beaches of Southern California and tempered in some of the most remote mountains on the planet, the songs of Bobo Czarnowski speak of a love for travel, a love for the mountains and the ocean, a love for people and a deep gratitude for all the above. While playing as part of a duo, he was privileged to open for folk music veterans like David Wilcox, John Gorka, Dougie Maclean, Chris Smithers, and others. He has been a frequent performer at all of San Diego’s coffee house venues, including a several year stint as sound man, stage manager, and open mic host at Java Joe’s. His voice is warm and inviting, and a comfort to listen to. His musical style is classic singer/songwriter with complex open tuning guitar melodies and lyrics that reflect the large value he places on social causes, the environment, and the long list of people he loves. Super-versatile and talented group featuring Scott Culver Thomson, Paul Castellanos, and Carol Mellor (who will also be working sound crew). Johnny does his best to pack a circus, a swing dance, and a tent revival into a single set of music. Noon Robin Henkel. Robin plays old bluesy songs on old funky guitars like nobody’s business, and could probably fill the whole day with train songs if we had the time. 1 p.m. Sharon Katz & The Peace Train. Sharon and her crew will take us on a ride from South Africa to Baja to Poway, and give us the opportunity to get up and dance if we have a mind to. 2 p.m. Joe Rathburn. Perhaps the most accomplished and versatile solo musician in San Diego. We can always count on Joe for a first-class performance on any occasion. 3 p.m. Splendid Torch. Down home Americana, filtered through the East Coast folk scene, presented by a trio of young, energetic musical standouts. The Crafter’s Retreat is an in-person event that gives makers of all levels the opportunity to disconnect from daily life, dive into the art of slow crafting, and handcraft beautiful projects from start to finish. Palomar Health is hosting a free online seminar on the physical and psychological effects of hearing loss. Palomar Health’s Chief of Audiology and Hearing Services, David M. Illich, Au.D., will host a review of the most current worldwide research. The primary focus will cover how hearing loss specifically affects our brain’s cognitive abilities. Participants can expect to receive a confirmation email within 24 hours of registration.
