Part 2: In San Diego, the racial divide in charges that can lead to life without parole has grown

In San Diego County, Black defendants are more likely than white defendants to face charges that can lead to life without parole. Even for the same crime. In part two of this two-part series, KPBS reporter Katie Hyson looks at how that gap has widened under the current District Attorney.
KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
