SAN DIEGO Landowners who routinely drop off property tax payments at the County Administration Building in downtown San Diego might want to think again this time because of construction in the area, Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said today.
The first installment of property taxes in this fiscal year is due Dec. 10.
"Due to major construction at the County Administration Center at 1600 Pacific Highway, we are encouraging taxpayers to pay online, by phone, by mail or at any of our four convenient branch locations," McAllister said. "Parking is limited at the CAC, and for the first time we will accept ready to drop off check payments `curbside' at the west end of the north parking lot."
The center's south parking lot has been torn up to create a waterfront park, which the county intends to use as a bayfront gathering place for civic events.
Four branch offices will offer extended hours on the due date, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., McAllister said. The offices are located in Chula Vista, 590 Third Ave.; El Cajon, 200 S. Magnolia St.; Kearny Mesa, 9225 Clairemont Mesa Blvd.; and San Marcos, 141 E. Carmel St.
"The other important thing to remember is that we will no longer accept cash at any of our branch locations -- no exceptions," McAllister said. "We will only accept cash in our downtown office."
The county mailed 980,654 property tax bills totaling $4.6 billion in September. McAllister said 60 percent are still unpaid.
