San Diego Council Committee Approves 20-Year Lease With Barrio Station

A 20-year lease renewal for Barrio Station, a nonprofit that serves youth in a disadvantaged area just south of downtown San Diego, was given tentative approval today from the City Council's Smart Growth and Land Use Committee.

The facility at 2175 Newton Ave. offers low-income and at-risk youth ages 6-18 a gymnasium, an auditorium with a stage and a swimming pool. According to staff, it has operated since 1980, making it one of the oldest Latino community organizations in San Diego.

Barrio Station provides recreation, educational and cultural programs, offers career and education support, after-school activities and organized community volunteer efforts.

Councilman David Alvarez, who represents the area, said the proposed renewal is "an easy request to support."

The lease, in which the city will charge rent of $3,412 in the first year and make annual inflation adjustments, will now go to the full City Council for approval.
