The Lyrical Groove is an award-winning band that seamlessly blend spoken word, hip hop, and soul. Kendrick Dial is the conductor of this artistic soul train and serves as dynamic front man and inspiring lyricist. Vocalist Brisa Lauren is his stage ace, and together provide a show like no other. The group took home the award for Best Hip-Hop at the October 2013 San Diego Music Awards. The following year, their full-length Spoken Soul won Best Hip-Hop Album at the SDMAs. Their music video for the song Wake Up—inspired by the movie Get Out—debuted in early 2018. In 2020, a solo single was released by Brisa L. Johnson, Ode to the Petty, with a video streaming online directed by Yellow Nguyen.

The Museum of Making Music's San Diego Sound Project concert series highlights emerging artists within the San Diego region. The project is supported by an advisory committee that includes GRAMMY Award winning producer and UCSD faculty member Kamau Kenyatta, CSUSM Professor and Center ARTES Executive Director Dr. Merryl Goldberg, Grossmont College Music Department Chair Derek Cannon, Emmy Award-winning composer and MiraCosta College faculty member Christy Coobatis, and Connections Chamber Music Series Co-Founder Bridget Dolkas.

The San Diego Sound Project has been made possible in part by The Conrad Prebys Foundation with live stream capabilities enhanced through a grant from the City of Carlsbad's Cultural Arts Office.
