City of San Diego voters elected Jerry Sanders mayor last night. Sanders beat out opponent Donna Frye with 54 percent of the vote to Frye's 46 percent. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has the story.

The mayor's race was billed as one of the most important races in San Diego's history. As the new leader, Sanders inherits the city's $1.4 billion pension deficit and two federal investigations into the city's financial disclosures.

Sanders says he's very excited San Diegans trust him to right the wrong.

Sanders: "It's just dawning on me now that I am going to be the mayor of San Diego. And I have the opportunity to help San Diegans solve the problems, to lead that effort. I'm looking forward to working with everyone in San Diego so we can restore confidence in city government."

Sanders said solving the city's problems will take time. But finding solutions begins immediately. He said Donna Frye's help will be key.

Sanders holds his first news conference as mayor at 11:00 this morning. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
