Would-be illegal immigrants performed the Christmas posada in Tijuana Thursday. The traditional holiday procession took on a political note and was used to protest what many immigration activists are calling draconian border enforcement measures. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.

Esmeralda Siu who coordinates the Migrant Defense Coaltion in Tijuana says they adapted Mary and Joseph's search for shelter in Bethlehem to call attention to the immigration debate.

She says the migrants knocked on three doors, as is tradition. But she says the first was painted to look like the metal border fence. The second - the concrete and metal fence. And she says the final door the one that opens for the migrants shows the desert where a record 464 illegal immigrants have died trying to cross this year.

Siu says the immigration bill before the U.S. House of Representatives calls for more potentially deadly enforcement measures. She says what's needed is a guest worker program that puts immigrants on the path to residency. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
