UC San Diego will become home to a groundbreaking research facility that will study the genetic code of different life forms in the world's oceans. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has the story.
It's got a complicated name: "The Community Cyber Infrastructure for Advanced Marine Microbial Ecology Research or Analysis." Or "CAMERA" for short. Scientists at CAMERA will use state-of-art computers and software to decipher the genetic codes of tens of thousand of varieties of marine life.
UCSD Chancellor Mary Anne Fox: "This initiative really puts UCSD at the forefront of a new discipline, metagenomics, and we're really looking forward to this world-class pioneering facility to be elaborated on the UCSD campus."
Scientists say the information gathered at CAMERA will help them better understand the human genetic code and evolution.
Gordon and Betty Moore awarded $25 million over a period of seven years to create the research. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS news.
