Authorities have unearthed a massive and sophisticated drug smuggling tunnel along the U.S. Mexico border. KPBS reporter Amy Isackson has more.

The tunnel has all the earmarks of a highly organized drug smuggling organization. The entrance on the Mexican side is hidden in a warehouse on an industrial lot. The tunnel is well constructed with lights, a poured cement floor and a pulley system. It plunges about 75 feet underground before surfacing about a quarter mile away inside a building in the United States.

U.S. authorities are in the midst of an investigation. Meanwhile, Mexican officials found about two tons of marijuana on their side of the passage.

This is the fourth tunnel discovered along the San Diego-Tijuana border during the last three weeks. It's by far the most elaborate.

Federal officials say increased border enforcement since 9/11 has literally forced smugglers underground.
