Julian honors African-American pioneers


The town of Julian is celebrating its Black History Month with an event honoring its African-American settlers. Host Tom Fudge speaks with an expert on Julian's history, and a man who discovered the grave markers for some of Julian's most prominent black pioneers.

If you are interested in attending the event honoring Julian's Black Pioneers, it will start at 2pm on Sunday, February 12th with the unveiling of the new headstones at the Julian Cemetery. For more information on the event, call 760-765-1857.

  • Ruth Lepper . A local freelance journalist who has written many articles about the history of Julian. Most of her work has appeared in the Julian Journal and the Ramona Home Journal.
  • David Lewis . Historian for the Julian Cemetery Association and a fourth-generation Julian resident. He identified the grave markers of Albert Johnson, America Newton, and Susan Tull.
