The UC Regents voted this afternoon to divest from nine foreign energy and oil companies that do business in Sudan. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has the story.
The vote is meant to put increasing economic pressure on the Sudanese government to stop what the UN calls "crimes against humanity."
Adam Sterling of the UC Sudan Divestment Task Force says so far, political pressure hasn't helped during the last three years.
Sterling: "The Sudanese government has been supporting and assisting Arab militias in committing an ethnic cleansing and a genocide against the black African population of Darfur."
Student activists like Sterling helped galvanize support for divestment. Hundreds rallied outside the Regents meeting at UCLA before the vote.
The targeted divestment focuses on companies that provide the Sudanese government and military with large amounts of revenue, while not providing benefit to the country's citizens.
