Baja California's Secretary of Public Security was ambushed in downtown Mexicali this morning. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.
Authorities say at least 15 gunmen opened fire on Secretary of Public Security Manuel Diaz Lerma on a busy street just blocks from state government buildings.
Diaz Lerma escaped unscathed but his three bodyguards were injured. Authorities have not detained any suspects, but have located two SUV's with California plates they believe were used in the attack.
The Border News Agency says it is the first attack on a high ranking state official in Baja California in recent years.
State officials say the attack is retaliation for the inroads they've made in fighting organized crime. Amy Isackson KPBS News.
