The battle over the cross on Mount Soledad has ratcheted up a notch , as statewide and national groups aiming to preserve it step into the fray. Rees Lloyd, a veteran and an attorney for the California Department of the American Legion, led a rally on the steps of the Korean War Memorial Thursday.

Lloyd: "Today we are giving notice to every agnostic, atheists every self righteous mincing attorney , we are going to fight you in every court action if we have to we're gonna fight you in the streets, but we will win in the end."

The Alliance Defense Fund, a national advocacy group, plans to file a lawsuit in support of the effort by the California chapter of the American Legion to defend the cross. Meanwhile the San Diego Veteran's Association has taken a position in favor of moving the cross off city owned land, to avoid violating the constitutional separation of Church and State.

A federal judge has ruled the 17 year long legal battle over the cross must come to an end, and ordered the city to pay fines of $5,000 a day if it is not moved by August first.
