The City of San Diego may soon join the likes of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Oceanside in taking a stand against a toll road in north San Diego County. Opponents say the Foothill Toll Road could have disastrous environmental impacts. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has more.

The San Diego City Council's Natural Resources committee approved a resolution by the Surfrider Foundation in opposition to the toll road. The matter now goes before the full council.

The Foundation's Mark Rauscher says its important cities throughout the state take a stand against the road. He says the Orange County agency in charge of the road has taken an insular view of its potential impacts.

Rauscher: This road would essentially destroy hundreds of acres of natural habitat within a state park, and cause the closing of a highly valuable coastal camp ground that's used by thousands of people every year."

Supporters of the toll road say it's needed to reduce traffic on the 5-South in Orange and San Diego Counties. Beth Ford Roth, KPBS News.
