The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard are teaming up to conduct a special two-week training exercise in San Diego Bay. It's the first drill of its kind on the West Coast. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The training is called Seahawk 2006. The exercise is designed to enhance coordination between the Navy and Coast Guard. Military officials say improved cooperation will help combat terrorism in U.S. waters. Navy spokesman Lieutenant Jeff Hoeft says government boats will patrol San Diego Bay during the next two weeks.
Hoeft: "There will be some Navy and Coastguard forces, playing another country, trying to do opposition attacks on us. Nothing is going to be real of course. But there will be some simulated attacks."
More than 1,000 Navy and Coast Guard sailors will take part in the training. Most of them will monitor the action at various Naval installations in San Diego County. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
