Last week an elderly blind couple in Cardiff lost their home and tens of thousands of dollars to their caretakers. According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, this was not an isolated incident. More than 200,000 seniors are financially abused in California each year and there may be as many as five million victims nationally. A new California law which goes into effect on January 1 may help. But adult children can be the first line of defense if they know how to deal with the delicate subject of finances with aging family members.
