Grossmont Union school board members decided to hold-off on voting for a measure that would ban students from wearing T-shirts with large logos. The panel heard from concerned teens and parents Thursday at its board meeting. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Grossmont Union school trustees expressed their support for the measure, but question whether its constitutional. If approved, Grossmont high school students could not wear T-shirts with images or logos larger than two inches. Board members say they want the district’s legal team to weigh-in on the matter before casting their vote. Ann Walker is a mother who urged the board not to approve the measure. She says the ban doesn’t make sense.
Walker : To demand a universal logo on all graphics and logos is not the action of a responsible public official. And its not in the best interest for the entire student body.
Supporters of the measure say too many shirts have messages promoting drugs, alcohol and gangs. They say the ban will make schools safer and there will be fewer behavioral problems if a strict dress code is enforced. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
