Education Leader Approves Gender-Segregated Classes

A national education leader speaking in San Diego says the Bush administration made the right decision to allow for more classes that separate boys from girls in public education. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more. Mike Casserly is director of the Great City Schools Council that represents the nation’s largest public school districts. This week the U.S. Education Department decided to give districts more freedom to develop single-sex classes. The move stirred-up feelings at the conference from those who support and oppose the approach. But Casserly applauds the move.

Casserly: I think a lot of our cities have come to the conclusion that sometimes girls and boys do better in single-sex environments for at least part of the day.

Casserly says single-sex classes should be optional, not mandatory. He also says there should be strict oversight to make sure classes though separate, are equal. Four school districts in San Diego County currently offer single-sex classes. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
