Local School Districts Recieve More Funding for "Reading First" Programs

Escondido, South Bay and Vista school districts will get about $2 million to keep their reading programs going. Reading First is a federal initiative designed to get students to read well by the end of the third grade. Educators are required to use scientifically-proven programs to reach that goal. San Diego County’s Reading First director Sandra Ceja says the three school districts receives get money because the schools satisfy all the ‘Reading First’ requirements.

Ceja: Willing to participate in staff development, willing to implement an ongoing assessment program, and willing to do that continuous improvement work and show that they were improving outcomes.

The Reading First program recently came under fire for mismanagement and favoritism. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
