Nearly 1,000 people crowded into Sacramento’s Loaves and Fishes for a Christmas meal and stockings stuffed with gifts yesterday. As Marianne Russ reports, nearly half as many volunteers spent their holiday making it happen.

Gayle Erlandson is the Volunteer coordinator at Loaves and Fishes.

She’s juggling assignments for nearly 400 people who’re spending their Christmas serving the area’s homeless a feast of ham, potatoes, green beans and pie.

Volunteer: Would you like some pineapple with your ham? More ham?

She had even more volunteers than she needed.

Erlandson: I just think it says something about the generosity of Sacramento.

Rita Lewis is one of those grateful for the meal and gifts of shampoo and other necessities. She’s staying in a shelter and looking for work right now.

Lewis: A random act of kindness goes a long way.

Many of the volunteers agree, saying they get as much out of helping as those on the receiving end.
