Point Loma Charter School in National Spotlight

U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez says businesses have to take a more active role in education if they want more workers with solid math and science skills. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the details.

Gutierrez used Point Loma’s Hi Tech High as a backdrop for his message. High Tech High is a charter school with an emphasis on technology and science. San Diego business leaders financially support the venture. Gutierrez says more companies need to work with educators to develop these kinds of schools. He says math and keep America’s economy competitive.

Gutierrez: Businesses are looking out to the future and realizing they’re going to need more engineers, more mathematicians, more scientists. They have to be involved ion the solution. They can’t just wait for someone else.

Gutierrez met with High Tech High’s business investors and educators to talk about how the collaboration works. He plans to bring those ideas to business executives in other parts of the country. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
