Tierrasanta Schools Developing Character Education Plan

San Diego community members will meet Tuesday evening to develop a character education plan for public schools in Tierrasanta. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Parents and educators in Tierrasanta are developing a program that would teach kids social values like responsibility, honesty and respect. Earlier this month State School Superintendent Jack O'Connell announced he wants all public schools to implement some type of character education plan. But San Diego educators say they've been working on their program since last year. Area Superintendent Rich Cansdale says parents are bringing some great ideas to the table.

Cansdale: So there is a strong force behind it, not just from an educators’ perspective, but parents and community members are very excited about this.

Cansdale says the Tierrasanta community will discuss which values and principles should be taught. Educators say new research shows character education improves attendance, attitudes and the overall safety at public schools. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
