Last week, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for fires in San Diego County. The threat of fire was enhanced by many factors, including hot dry weather. And anyone who owns a home on a hillside knows the value of keeping nearby brush at a minimum. But how do you do that? One answer is goats. They're quiet. They're agile. And they're champions when it comes to eating combustible plants.
Wolfgang Pittroff is an assistant professor of range animals, in the department of Animal Science, at UC Davis. And he's one of California's experts when it comes to the use of goats to reduce fire hazards.
