San Diego State and Cal State San Marcos faculty members say they're ready to go on strike. If they do, they will take part in the largest strike in the history of higher education. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
More than 2,200 professors and staff work on the two campuses. The union representing them and faculty members at 21 other CSU campuses has been locked in a bitter labor dispute with the university's administration. The main issue is salary increases. In an effort to bring management back to the table, the union called for a strike vote. More 90 percent of the members of the California Faculty Association voted in favor a work stoppage. San Diego State's union leader is Mark Wheeler.
Wheeler : Their feeling on campus now is hopeful. There's a sense that we can do something about this, and that we can act and make a difference.
If the two sides can't agree on a new contract, faculty members take turns walking off the job two days at a time.
