Cancer Expert Says Edwards is Right to Continue Campaign

Talks shows and blogs have been filled with criticism of presidential candidate John Edwards, who's decided to stay on the campaign trial despite his wife's diagnosis with incurable cancer. A San Diego expert on the psycho-social aspects of cancer say Edwards is doing the right thing. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has more.

Matthew Loscalzo is the director of Patient and Family Support at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. He has 26 years of experience working with cancer patients and their families. Loscalzo thinks people who want John Edwards to drop his campaign and sit by his wife Elizabeth's bedside are driven by fear.

Loscalzo : Their irrational fear is based on them wanting John Edwards and his wife out of the limelight, because they personally feel threatened by someone who has cancer, especially someone who has a cancer as serious as her cancer.

Loscalzo says the Edwards affair will force Americans to have a conversation about what it means to be ill, and how society should treat those who are the most vulnerable. Kenny Goldberg, KPBS News.
