San Diego Diocese Names Dozens of Priests Accused of Abuse

The Catholic Diocese of San Diego has posted on its website the names of dozens of priests accused of sex abuse. The release of names comes two days after the diocese filed documents in bankruptcy court proposing a $95 million settlement for victims. KPBS Radio’s Andrea Hsu reports.

Close to 40 priests are listed, more than half of whom are deceased. Their collective service spans seven decades, from the late 1920s to the late 1990s. These are priests who -- in the words of the Diocese -- have credible allegations of abuse filed against them. Releasing their names was something San Diego Bishop Robert Brom said he would do when the diocese filed for bankruptcy in late February.

The group Survivors Network of Those Abused By Priests responded with a statement. They accuse Bishop Brom of focusing on the priests while continuing to hide the names of officials they say enabled and covered up the crimes. The group called for the publication of those still-secret names.

For KPBS, I'm Andrea Hsu.
