Jim Mumford is turning his commercial rooftop into a green oasis. Good Earth Plant Company, in industrial Kearny Mesa, is the first commercial building with a large-scale rooftop garden. In March, Mumford and his crew planted a variety of native, drought-resistant vegetation. He says these so-called eco-roofs have many environmental benefits, such as filtering stormwater, reducing energy costs, and lowering air temperatures caused by the urban heat island effect.
