The two most influential school superintendents in San Diego County sat down to talk a rare public meeting about the federal No Child Left Behind Act. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The county's superintendent Randy Ward and San Diego's superintendent Carl Cohn took part in a forum examining federal education policy. Cohn criticized the federal law, saying teachers are giving up because the act unfairly punishes schools. He doesn't believe the federal government can rescue failing schools and kids.
Cohn : I think you're going to end up stranded on a rooftop, waiting for a helicopter, before the federal government is going to rescue these kids.
Ward agreed but noted that No Child Left Behind has helped to pinpoint which students aren't making the grade.
Ward : None of us knew -- they were hidden in the data.
Both leaders are urging lawmakers to rethink and rewrite the federal act.
