Homeless Vets Get Free Meals, Guidance
Hundreds of homeless veterans enjoyed free meals, shelter and medical treatment today. The 20th annual Stand Down event helps veterans get off the street and apply for housing and jobs. Former Army infantryman Steve Land was homeless when he first attended Stand Down in 2003. Now he rents an apartment and works part-time at a hospital.
Land: Yeah, I got my head straight, and with VVSD and all their benefits and all their counselors and everything, I was able to stay clean and sober -- and I'm still clean and sober.
Veterans relaxed under huge military tents and talked to employers and substance abuse counselors. Volunteers from the Veterans Village of San Diego expect that more than 800 men and women will attend the event through Sunday.
