San Diego school kids are settling into a handful of new campuses this year. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis took a tour of the new and improved Burbank Elementary in Barrio Logan and has this report.

Diane Grijalva: This is the preschool area we can walk around and see the kindergarten classes . . .

Diane Grijalva is the new principal of Burbank Elementary, a campus that was rebuilt this year. Its one of five new schools in the southern part of the school district -- an area that many say has long been neglected by district officials. Grijalva says the school's new library media center is a luxury her students didn't have before.

Grijalva: As you can tell it’s packed with books, it’s fully stocked. Because at the old Burbank there was a tiny little room and kids didn't really have a chance to go visit the library and check out books.

Most of Burbank's students speak Spanish. Grijalva says this year teachers will rely on computer data and analysis to figure out where their English learners are at academically, and how to bring them up to speed.
