It was a lackluster opening day for San Diego school district's much anticipated Truancy Center. The center is a place for students who get caught skipping class. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
District officials opened the truancy center on time, but they're using a temporary space at the old Gompers High School.
The district's Eddie Caballero says remodeling a rented office space is taking longer than they thought. That's why the vacant campus in south San Diego is being used.
Caballero : We really wanted a location that was central that was close to trolley lines, bus lines, pick-up and drop-off. Here at Gompers it's a little harder to navigate, and that's one of the issues we're dealing with.
District officials secured the Mission Valley site after months of debate. They picked it in part because it’s in a gang-free zone. Many community members didn't want to have the center in their backyard.
