Tom Fudge: The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have postponed tomorrow's hearing, which was going to focus on steroids in baseball. Last week, former Senator George Mitchell's investigative committee issued a report on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in the sport.
The congressional committee summoned baseball commissioner Bud Selig and baseball union leader Donald Fehr to testify. Supposedly, they'll be in the Washington spotlight next month.
The Mitchell Report has been, by far, the most damning study of the use of steroids and other performance boosters in baseball. Now the question is: how will the major leagues respond? Will they go through the motions, but let the problem continue? Or will they get real and get tough with independent investigators and serious sanctions?
