A public hearing at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is expected to be packed today with opponents of the "trestles toll road" project. The Coastal Commission is considering whether to approve a toll road that runs directly through San Onofre State Park. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.
Transportation Corridor Agencies of Orange County wants to construct the six-lane Foothill South toll road in southern Orange and northern San Diego Counties.
A Coastal Commission staff report says the road would damage the state park.
The staff recommends rejecting the proposal. Supporters say the road will relieve congestion on part of I-5.
State Treasurer Bill Lockyer and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger are on opposite sides on the toll road proposal.
The governor supports the project. Lockyer wants the Coastal Commission to reject it.
Environmental groups say the toll road would threaten precious coastal open space, water quality, and the surf break at Trestles.
They also say it would set a dangerous precedent for the State Park system.
