The San Diego Unified school board president says up to 1,500 district employees will get layoff notices next month. She says many of those pink slips will fall into the laps of local teachers. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

San Diego school board president Katherine Nakamura says the district could layoff anywhere from 1,000 to 1,500 school employees as a result of the governor's proposed budget cuts.

Nakamura announced the projection during an interview on the KPBS talk show These Days. She says many teachers will get layoff notices.

Nakamura : Cutting teachers is going to be inevitable. I hate to say that but there is just no way of getting around cutting teachers.

She did not say just how many teachers will get notices, but it is the first time a San Diego school official has talked about how many employees could lose jobs.

Nakamura says newer teachers will most likely get squeezed out of their jobs because of a process known as "bumping." That's when more experienced educators replace new educators at schools. District officials say employees with seniority have certain civil service rights.
