I-5 Congestion Should Ease Next Month

Commuters on a congested portion of I-5 near Solana Beach should see some relief soon.  Part of the project to extend carpool lanes will be finished by the end of next month. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has details.

Anyone driving in either direction on the stretch of I-5 from Via De La Valle to Lomas Santa Fe knows how traffic can slow to a crawl at times.

A $66 million California Department of Transportation project aims to improve the traffic flow in that area.

In the meantime, the construction has added to the slowdown.

But Caltrans I-5 Corridor Director Allen Kosup says some of that will be changing at the end of next month.

That's when carpool lanes will be extended on both sides of the freeway from Via De La Valle to just south of Manchester Avenue.

Kosup: Immediately we would hope that some people would see a five minute time savings as some of that congestion is relieved.

He says all of the project work should be completed in Fall 2009.

Kosup says as improvements are completed, commuters should experience less congestion along that portion of I-5.
