A new state report shows San Diego elementary and middle school kids continue to make gains on state tests, but high school kids are way behind. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has the story.
The Academic Performance Index report measures student achievement every year. The state wants each school to score at least 800 points on the index. In San Diego Unified, only 37-percent of elementary and middle schools reached that mark last year. And just three-percent of local high schools met the target.
The district's Gino Flores says the district is not doing its job.
We definitely have to improve in how we deliver information and how we instruct high school students so that they perform at higher rates.
Although San Diego schools are not posting big gains on the index, they are outperforming schools in other large urban school districts in California
State education officials say schools that don't make consistent improvements from year-to-year might face federal or state sanctions.
