Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger meets tonight in Mexico City with other border governors and Mexican President Felipe Calderon. They'll be talking about border wait times, smuggling and the environment. KPBS Reporter Mc Lear Amy Isackson has the story.
The Governors of U.S. and Mexican border states decided at their annual meeting last summer to lobby both countries' federal governments together with the idea that it would increase their clout.
In February, they went to Washington DC. Now, they're turning their attention to Mexico City.
Schwarzenegger's spokesman Aaron Mc Lear says the Governor hopes to push the idea of more private investment in border crossings and infrastructure.
McLear: The goal is a 50-percent decrease in border crossing wait times by the year 2013. If the respective federal or state governments don't have the capital to get that project done, it’s just an infusion of capital and know how so you can get a project done more quickly and efficiently.
Mc Lear says the governors will also discuss sharing information on weapons in attempt to crack down on the flow of guns from the United States to Mexico.
Schwarzenegger will host the next annual border governor's meeting in Hollywood this August.
