A new San Diego Foundation report finds 23 math and science programs in San Diego County are worthy of additional financial support. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The report is designed to get philanthropic groups to take interest in the programs that are actually producing results.
The report's author John Yochelson says less than 40-percent of San Diego County's high school graduates are prepared to tackle math and science in college. He hopes this study will encourage donors to stick by these programs for the long haul.
Yochelson: They take a lot more interest in getting things started, than in sustaining them. And getting our community aligned around programs will mean they will have a better chance of lasting longer.
Point Loma's High Tech High , UC San Diego's Preuss Charter School and Sweetwater Unified’s Compact for Student Success are among the 23 programs recognized.
Some lesser known programs include a museum-based science program in City Heights called School in the Park, and a marine science program in San Diego called Bahia.
