Tom Fudge: John Perkins is a best-selling author whose view of the world seems made-to-order for cynics and skeptics. His first book, called Confessions of an Economic Hit Man was a best seller for more than a year.
Perkins says it drew on his own experience as a consultant who worked for international banking institutions. His job was to get poor countries into debt, get them to buy a lot of American products and ultimately force them to make political concessions to have their debt forgiven. Basically, it portrayed the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund as little more than a world-wide loan-sharking operation.
Now, he has a new book out called The Secret History of the American Empire . In it he writes about the "corporatocracy," a collection of international corporations, governments and media organizations who basically run the world.
John Perkins will hold a book signing tonight at 7pm at the Barnes & Noble in Mira Mesa, 10775 Westview Parkway.
